| This paper investigates the response of beef cattle producers to changes in the price of cattle. Previous research has suggested that there may be a negative short-run supply response to a permanent increase in the price of cattle. We build a dynamic, rational expectations model that predicts that the supply response is generally positive, even for permanent shocks in the short run, and nests the negative supply response as a special case for appropriately restricted demand shocks. Using annual US time series data (1930-1997) and a simultaneous-equations econometric approach, we find a positive short-run supply response in the cow market and mixed evidence in the heifer market. |

| The species of the Pyramidellidae collected during several expeditions in the south-eastern part of the North Atlantic Ocean are listed, with locality data, depth ranges, and notes on nomenclature, systematics and distribution. The samples classified with the genera Eulimella (partly), Anisocycla, Syrnola, Chrysallida and Odostomella are dealt with in this paper. In total 70 species are reported from the research area, 24 of which are described as new to science. A lectotype of Obeliscus gracillima Smith, 1872 (= Eulimella variabilis de Folin, 1870) and neotypes of Chrysallida multicostata (Jeffreys, 1884) and Jaminia obtusa Brown, 1827, are designated. |

| Renewable natural resources constitute major sources for socioeconomic development of all developing countries, if they can be con-served, developed and sustainably exploited. For its strategic conservation and sustainable exploitation, biodiversity has to be investigated and documented at various levels and in an internationally accepted manner. However, the human and material resources available in the developing countries are insufficient to under-take the necessary studies, while various forces continue to degrade or erode biodiversity; The obvious solution is through collaboration in research and training. |

| Tariff rate quota administration and implementation are empirically evaluated for the fourteen developing countries notifying the WTO of the use of TRQs. FAO trade data, UNCTAD data on applied tariffs and the WTO notifications permit us to assess underfill of quotas, discrimination among exporters, use of state trading as an implementation mechanism, and the extent of protection under these TRQs. Substantial liberalization was found, generally due to use of low MFN tariffs rather than through TRQs permitting greater market access. High tariff bindings and endogenous quotas allow these countries to pursue flexible trade regimes within their WTO commitments. |

| Em 30 pares de rins estudaram-se as artérias e veias, no hilo de cão da raça Pequinês. Os ramos arteriais são contados à direita e à esquerda, entre 6 e 16, e 5 e 13, e as raízes venosas, 1 e 7, e 1 e 10; os vasos arteriais são exclusivamente periféricos 100% e 93,3%, e as raízes venosas centrais; os vasos arteriais são iguais em número, 13,3%, e as raízes venosas, 46,6%; os quadrantes craniais são mais densamente povoados. O teste t de Student não é significante, ao nível de 5%, quanto ao sexo e aos rins (direito e esquerdo). O coeficiente de correlação linear de Pearson é positivo entre o número de artérias e veias, nas fêmeas, para ambos os rins, mas inexistente nas mesmas condições entre os machos. |

| Fifty-six opossums (Didelphis aurita) were captured on the campus of Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica county, Rio de Janeiro state, in order to investigate the occurrence of Borrelia sp among them in relation with the study of spirochaetemia and its ectoparasites. Blood tests were made through dark field and phase contrast microscopy, as well as the obtainment of blood smears. Smears were stained with Giemsa stain, which did not prove efficacy. There was no relation between results obtained through blood tests (13 opossum positive for Borreliasp.), and this technique (two positive animals). | Foram estudados os efeitos da aplicação do composto de lixo, proveniente da cidade de São Paulo (usina de compostagem São Matheus), na presença e ausência de calcário dolomítico (para elevar a saturação por bases a 70%) e de adubos minerais, sobre a condutividade elétrica (CE), pH em CaCl2 0,01 mol L-1 e em água, e acidez potencial (H + Al) de 21 solos ácidos e cinco solos alcalinos, nos quais o calcário foi substituído por gesso. O experimento foi realizado em condições de casa de vegetação em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com parcelas em faixas e três repetições.
